Heathrow Airport recorded only a 0.3% increase in passenger numbers so far this year, underscoring the impact of capacity constraints at the UK’s busiest airport. Data from January to September show 63.3 million passengers passed through Heathrow’s four terminals — just 200,000 more than the same period last year — as its two runways continue to operate near full capacity.
The airport recently unveiled plans for a third runway, which would enable an additional 276,000 flights per year, increasing annual movements from 480,000 to 756,000. Heathrow aims to secure planning approval by 2029 and hopes to make the new runway operational within the next decade.
The £21 billion ($28 billion) expansion is expected to be privately financed, though concerns remain over its potential impact on passenger charges. Despite limited overall growth, Heathrow reported its busiest-ever September, welcoming 7.3 million passengers.
This summer at Heathrow was one to be celebrated, said CEO Thomas Woldbye. Operating Europe’s largest airport doesn’t come without challenges, but our team delivered under pressure — maintaining strong performance in punctuality and security while welcoming nearly 7.4 million passengers.
He added that Heathrow continues to lead the pack in global connectivity, emphasizing its vital role in supporting the UK’s economic growth and ongoing investments to expand opportunities for passengers and airlines.
