Liverpool John Lennon Airport was forced to suspend runway operations earlier today due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions, resulting in multiple flight cancellations and delays.
The runway was closed on Monday morning as airport teams worked to clear accumulated snow and ensure safe operational standards. The disruption caused significant inconvenience to passengers, with many holidaymakers having to alter or postpone their travel plans.
In an update issued later in the day, a spokesperson for the airport confirmed that the runway had reopened following extensive clearing and safety checks.
“We now have some better news,” the spokesperson said. “The runway has reopened after earlier safety and operational issues caused by the snow and icy conditions experienced throughout the day. However, flights remain subject to possible delays or cancellations. Passengers traveling today are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates.”
Despite the reopening, several flights continued to face knock-on delays, particularly to destinations across Europe. Services to Poland, Lithuania, and Ireland were among those most affected.
Cancellations earlier in the day included a Jet2 flight to Krakow, a Wizz Air service to Gdansk, and an easyJet flight bound for Tenerife. Airport authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as crews work to maintain safe operations amid the winter weather.
