Five airports across four Arab countries were damaged following a series of missile and drone strikes launched by Iran in retaliation for the recent US-Israeli military actions on Iranian soil, according to official statements and reports monitored by Anadolu Agency.
The attacks targeted airports in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Iraq, resulting in one fatality, several injuries, and significant material damage.
United Arab Emirates
In the UAE, Abu Dhabi Airports confirmed on Sunday that authorities had intercepted an unidentified drone targeting Zayed International Airport. The interception caused debris to fall, tragically killing an Asian national and injuring seven others. In a statement, the company confirmed that emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene to address the situation.
Meanwhile, the Dubai Government Media Office reported a separate incident at Dubai International Airport late Saturday. Emergency response teams were immediately activated, and four people were injured during the event. All injured individuals received urgent medical attention, though no further details on the cause of the incident or the perpetrators were disclosed.
Kuwait
In Kuwait, two drones struck Kuwait International Airport late Saturday night. According to Kuwait's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the drone strikes caused some material damage and resulted in minor injuries to several airport workers. The second drone hit the newly developed Terminal 2 (T2) at the airport, causing further material damage. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control.
Bahrain
Bahrain International Airport was also targeted by a drone strike early Sunday. The Interior Ministry confirmed that while the attack resulted in material damage, no casualties were reported. Authorities swiftly initiated procedures to secure the area and assess the damage.
Iraq
In Iraq, a drone fell near Erbil International Airport in the Kurdish region early Sunday morning. Local media outlets, including Naynawh Al-Ghad TV, reported that the drone landed near a US military base located in the area. Videos circulating on social media showed black smoke rising from the vicinity.
This incident followed an earlier suicide drone attack carried out by the Iraqi Shiite group Saraya Awliya al-Dam, which claimed responsibility for targeting US military facilities in the region. The drone strike in Erbil is believed to be part of a broader response to the recent US-Israeli airstrike on Iran.
The retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Iran come just days after the US and Israel launched an assault on Iranian targets. Iranian officials confirmed on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several senior officials, were killed in the attack, which sparked further escalation.
As tensions continue to rise, authorities across the region have heightened security measures at airports and military facilities.
